A “surprising” new report adds to growing evidence that diet drinks are working against us in our efforts to lose weight. Researchers who followed a group of 474 people over a 10-year period found those who used diet sodas experienced a 70% increase in their belly circumference vs. those who did not drink diet sodas.
For frequent diet soda drinkers, defined as two or more a day, belly size increased a gargantuan 500% compared to non diet soda drinkers.
As I’ve been posting for the last 30+ years…
Diet sodas have zero nutritionally redeeming features and have been associated with a number of unhealthy scenarios including:
- metabolic syndrome
- poorer bone health
- tooth enamel erosion
- kidney function decline
Drinking them is bad role modeling and a bad habit, and a simple one to unload.
My 2 favorite beverages are: Water with lemon or lime and unsweetened tea (black, green, and white teas all have lots of healthy components–so enjoy)

Food choices were the most influential (not surprising)
The specific foods associated with the greatest weight gain over time were potato chips, sugary beverages, unprocessed meats, and processed meats.
*Sidebar: I have found in my 30+years of Food and Weight Loss Coaching there are a lot more–
Researchers also found that increasing the consumption of certain foods protected against weight gain. These foods included nuts, fruits, whole grains, and vegetables. (again–no revelation here)
As stated…None of this is surprising and in my opinion barely “scratches the scratch” — It did not even factor in exercise. But I guess it’s a start.
