Cancer, diabetes, depression, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s are increasingly thought to have a common denominator: Inflammation. 

Obesity, too, makes you prone to inflammation.

Here are few food food tips to help protect yourself:

Unhealthy Fats to Avoid

1. Artificially hardened fats, containing oxidized fatty acids and trans fats, are pro-inflammatory, (cause inflammation) and have no place in any diet intended to promote good health.

This includes: Margarine, vegetable shortening and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, all of which should all be avoided.

Sidebar: You will often be ambushed in many restaurants, because they sell margerine as butter since it’s far chaper than real butter.  Sometimes only the chef and owners know, the waiters have no idea.

2. Avoid fried food in restaurants, especially fast-food restaurants. The oils in the fryers will contain oxidized/rancid fats.

Good tip: Train your nose to detect rancidity. It’s the smell of oil paint. Throw out any oils that smell rancid. Do not eat any nuts, seeds or whole-grain flours or cereals that smell rancid. Smell any commercial products made with oil to check for rancidity before you eat them. More to come on this important topic–next time.
