That is, not until Burger King got strategic.By taking a step back and evaluating the best opportunities for gaining on McDonald’s, the executive team at Burger King realized that their greatest challenge was finding the best locations for opening new restaurants, because it cost millions to do the research to identify the prime locations.But in a moment of strategic genius, they realized that McDonald’s had already paid to do the research for them. So instead of investing well over a million dollars and a year or two to identify each new location, Burger King adopted the strategy of opening all their new restaurants within two to three blocks of an existing McDonald’s.

This allowed them to expand at a dizzying rate with complete certainty that they were opening up in areas where people already came to buy hamburgers. And it saved them tens of millions of dollars they would have spent on location research and could now invest in other areas of the business.

Consequently, within a few short years, Burger King had acquired a significant portion of McDonald’s market share. And Wendy’s? They were now a very distant third.

That’s the advantage that a strong strategy will always give you over the greatest tactics.
